The judges had the following remarks to the winning slideshow:

—This was stunning. Beautiful Macro images that captured the quiet of nature at dusk. The words emphasised the peace and tranquillity that was shown by the images. The font and size of the text was perfect and care had been taken to use white or black so that it was easy to read against the background. The music had been carefully chosen and the images were played to the rhythm so that they flowed effortlessly. A worthy winner.

—I thought this was an exquisite production, beautiful photography and a wonderful choice of music. The author is to be congratulated on their skills.

—A lovely, gentle, slide show taking us on a journey through the forest.
There was some beautiful photography, very neatly presented with a good consistent aspect ratio. The pace of the movement was just right, enough time to take on board both the words and images. No sound effects were needed, the words and picture told their own story. An excellent presentation set to exactly the right piece of music.

The jury’s general remarks

Thank you to everyone who entered this competition. It was enjoyable to see all the beautiful landscapes and places of interest. There was some outstanding and creative photography that was a pleasure to view. For those who didn’t manage to win an award this year, some tips to look out for that could help improve your future shows are:

• Several of the shows had variable aspect ratio images rather than keeping them all the same. This is visually distracting as you see the edges of the frame moving during the transitions. Some were just a collection of images which could have been in any order, rather than telling a story or creating a visually harmonious piece. Look at the colour, lines, and shapes between adjacent images so they flow smoothly from one to the next. Keeping horizon lines constant is another important aspect.
• Also, a lot were not played to the music, and all the images and transitions were of similar duration. A show needs pace to keep viewers’ attention and interest. The music needs to match the mood of the images, and in some cases, the choice was poor and did nothing to reinforce the mood; it was just background. Also, take care to use the natural ending of a piece of music rather than just cutting off abruptly or fading out. It is better to adjust a piece in the middle by removing or repeating a section.
• Some movement can be advantageous in adding interest, but constant zooming or panning just for the sake of it is distracting. Much better to use slower soft-edge wipes to draw the viewer’s eye to an interesting part of the image. Using slower dissolves that create the magical 3rd image also enhances a show.

The Finnish association SKSL organised a themed exhibition titled “Together” in Turku. The beautiful and historic Turku Library served as the exhibition venue.

The autumn meeting was held at the exact location. During the opening session, 15 badges of honour, accompanied by diplomas and pins, were presented to talented and dedicated Finnish photographers.

At the same meeting, the impressive NFFF 10th Anniversary Book was also introduced. The book’s release was seen as a pleasant surprise and has been very well received. It offers an excellent summary of NFFF’s ten years of activity. The book is now also available for purchase in Finland (price: €18 + postage).

Udendørs fotoudstilling i hjertet af Odense

Odense Fotografiske Amatørklub (OFA) fejrede sit 125-års med en stort anlagt jubilæumsudstilling i det centrale Odense, meget tæt på rådhus og domkirke. Alle af klubbens 27 medlemmer udstillede hver et billede printet i format 125×90 cm, som kunne ses døgnet rundt. Udstillingen startede i forbindelse med Kulturens Døgn med mange kulturelle aktiviteter den 25. april og fortsatte indtil 24. maj.

Vi ville gerne fejre jubilæet ved at vise vores billeder for hele byen. Derfor arrangerede vi en udendørs udstilling under mottoet: Hellere et billede pr. medlem, der ses af hele byen – frem for 10 billeder, der kun ses af det sædvanlige fotointeresserede publikum.

Vi må sige at missionen lykkedes. Mange forbipasserende og selvfølgelig også rigtig mange fotointeresserede så vores billeder.

Takket være donation fra NFFF, en lokal fond og et tilskud fra kommunen lykkedes det at finansiere udstillingen. OFA har haft mange aktiviteter med planlægning, fremstilling af udstillingsstandere, udvælgelse og forberedelse af billeder samt opsætning og nedtagning af udstillingen. En fin proces, der styrker sammenholdet i klubben.

Det er planen at udstillingen sættes op andre steder i Odense og på Fyn. Og så råder klubben nu over fine udstillingsstandere, som kan anvendes næste gang vi har mulighed for at udstille billeder i stort format.
